| Mrs. Antonucci-Grade 3 October 2008-2009 Our class won a prize for the highest number of new members!!! Thanks for all who joined the PTO. The prize was a $25 gift certificate at the book fair. Our new student council representative is Griffin Maguire. Congratulations Griffin!! The alternate is Paola Dante. Thanks to all students who ran for the office and gave speeches and made posters. Weekly Specials Schedule Monday- Library Tuesday-Gym (wear sneakers) Wednesday- Music Thursday- Art (bring a smock--Smocks needed this week!!!) Friday- Computer Lab Homework - Students should have their homework assignments written in their assignment pads each night. I would suggest initialing the assignment on a nightly basis. Students should practice their math facts nightly. Hopefully they have their own set of flashcards for this purpose. We've started a game called "Around the World" to help them practice their facts. It's the beginning of our Math Olympics. Pleas concentrate on addition facts 1-18 only. Current Topics for September- MATH ***** The month of October we will focus on learning about the place value of numbers. Students will learn to name numbers four ways- (standard form, expanded form, place value form and word form). We will start a countdown to the 100th day of school keeping track of the days and remembering to regroup the ones into tens, until we have ten groups of tens!!! Check out the website factmonsters.com to practice math facts LANGUAGE***** This week's grammar lessons focus on the compound subject and predicate of a sentence. We will review the question statement, command and exclamatory sentences as well. This week's writing is the biography. Students will research a famous person and write a short biography. SPELLING **** The fifth spelling list is a review list. The list of words is as follows: clock, drink, moved, waking, hopped, folded, stain, layer, team, slow, toast, ladies, flies, bushes, games loyal, modeled. Science : The habitats dioramas are complete and on display in the third grade hallway. They turned out really well. The students worked very hard on their projects, and should be very proud of their efforts. SOCIAL STUDIES****Students will be learning about communities and how citizens live, work , and play together. We will be looking at maps and improving our map reading skills. Students will be required to draw a map and include a mapkey and compass rose. READING : This is a review week in our reading series. That means it's a reader's theater week. Students will be reading a play and performing for each other. The following is a list of our new robust words: camouflage, viewers, survive, concealed, independent, donated, media, feature, image, popular.Each week we add the new words to our word wall. By the end of the year your child should have a very impressive speaking vocabulary.
