Homework is very important in 4th grade (as it is in any grade). I give homework to follow up on a lesson or skill we are working on in school. It is important that your child completes his/her homework as assigned and on time. We use it in the next day's lesson so if it is not completed or forgotten your child is at a disadvantage. Please set aside a homework time and encourage you child to do it and immediately put it into their book bag. Your child will have some homework every night except on weekends. *Once in a while homework is given over a weekend. * * We have a HOMEWORK board in the classroom with all assignments listed for each day. It is your child's responsibility to write down the assignments when given during the dayand then check the board again before going home each day. Homework will not be posted daily on this website. Weekly Spelling Assignments: Each week spelling assignments follow the same format. Of course there may be exceptions with vacations, half-days, etc. The assignments will always be as follows unless otherwise noted in your child's homework pad. The complete weekly assignments can be found in the "Welcome to 4th Grade" packet you received the first day of school. They are also taped in the front cover of your child's spelling spiral. Tuesday : 3 x's each due in cursive. Thursday : 5 sentences with 2 unit words in each are due. Each sentence needs to be at least 8 words long. Specific requirements for these sentences will be given with the new unit list of words. (For example -sentences might need to include proper nouns, possessives, helping verbs) Friday : Unit Test / Workbook due. New list will be handed out and reviewed together. ** Review lessons are different for the week : ABC order, a short story written in school using 10 words from list, and all workbook pages is the weekly assignment. Classroom Updates READING : We are working on using "reading strategies" each day in reading. Various reading materials are being used. ** Please encourage your child to READ at least 20 minutes each day at home. LANGUAGE: Language work is daily on every paper we do / write. All year we will work on specific English rules and skills. We All papers completed by the students will be expected to show good writing skills - capitals, punctuation, correct spelling, etc. We are practicing writing good essay answers using supporting information from stories / written passages MATH: Facts continue to be a problem for many students in our classroom. You child should and needs to know ALL their facts by this point in school - [Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division] Homework each night will be to study the facts. We will be working on probability, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, grids, etc. to finish out the year. Math facts are important in all math activities. Below is a good website to help students with their facts. http://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards.htm PLEASE NOTE: "Clicking on any of these sites may take you out of the Watertown District website." Social Studies: We have just finished the North Central Region. Tests have been taken. We will be working on their assessments. To finish out the year, we will be learning the rest of the 50 states locations, name, capital, and postal abbreviations. We will also be doing a unit on Connecticut. Review of this information is needed weekly. There will be quizzes given. Science: We are working on a Water Unit. After this unit and completed assessment we will be doing a unit on Force & Motion. Quizzes will be given periodically so nightly review is important. *** FYI - If you need to contact me for any reason, you have several options: ~ Call me at school - 860-945-4840 ( I will return your call within 24 hours) ~ Email me - jeansu@watertownctschools.org ~ Send a note in with your child
