Math: In math, students will soon be tackling numbers. Students will begin the year working hard on place value, rounding, and comparing whole numbers and decimals. Next time you visit the grocery store, have your child estimate and compare prices of products. Next, we will be reviewing the operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Don’t forget to encourage your child to study his/her class notes and multiplication facts daily. Language: Every child learns differently. Therefore, in reading, we will start off the year by studying how people learn and what good learners do. My students will take a learning style inventory quiz to figure out how they learn best. This will help me become familiar with your child's learning style so that I can match my instructional methods to meet his or her needs. The results can also help parents make education more meaningful and successful at home. Therefore, ask your child whether he or she is a kinesthetic, auditory, or visual learner and have a discussion about it What do good readers do as they read? Throughout the year we will learn all about helpful reading strategies that will enable your child to become a stronger and more successful reader. Please encourage your child to read and state the main idea, recall facts and details, sequence events, summarize the story, recognize cause and effect relationships, compare and contrast information, make predictions, find word meaning in context, draw conclusions, make inferences, distinguish between fact and opinion, identify the author's purpose, interpret figurative language, and make connections. Please encourage your child to read nightly to expand their vocabulary and enhance their comprehension skills. They will begin reading The Cricket in Times Square independently during their library time. Social Studies: What state is located at 42° North Latitude and 73° West Longitude? If you don’t know, ask your child to find the state on a map. This September in social studies, fifth graders will be studying map skills. They will learn how to read and describe different types of maps. Pull out your maps at home and study them with your child. Talk to your child about directions and the names of the streets in your neighborhood. Don’t forget to involve your child when you are planning your next road trip. Science: In science, students soon will be in and out of the Science lab conducting experiments. Science classes will be starting a unit on electricity and magnetism. Ask your child what requires electricity to work and research electricity at the library. Explore magnetism around the house using magnets.
