Welcome to Mr. Pflomm's Class

I'd like to welcome you to our class website.    Have a great year!

CONTENT

MATH:We will be starting the year working on place value.  The computer and the internet will be utilized to introduce and explore real world applications of place value.  Each class will start with two daily oral math problems that help review different math strands in preparation for the Connecticut Mastery Test.

  LANGUAGE ARTS

SPELLING: Polk School will be utilizing a new spelling series this coming year.  It will be used in conjunction with our new reading series.

READING:  Reading this year will consist of many different types of reading.  We will use cloze activities and reader response journals in conjunction with our new reading series.  Our reading anthology, National Geographic Explorer, and trade books will be used to work on comprehension skills.  The student should have a book at all times that he or she can use for DEAR and SSR reading.

We are reading the trade book The Cricket in Times Square and the students will be responding to the text in their response journals.

In order to improve vocabulary we have started a new weekly vocabulary packet called Robust Vocabulary.  The students get a new packet each week with five new vocabulary words.  The goal of the packet is to increase the student's vocabulary both in conversation, reading, and writing.

WRITING:  Expository writing will be the focus of most fifth grade writing.  We will be writing across all content areas not just during writing time.  The students will be writing essays that will be scored and essays that they will revise, edit, and publish.

The new reading series will also contain a language component.  This wilily focus on language mechanics and grammar.  Many times these assignments will come home to be finished as homework.

    SCIENCE:

To start the year the students will be working on a number of problem solving activities.  In addition to working on problem solving skills, the students will be introduced to a lab report format.  This format will then be reinforced in additional problem solving activities.  From here we'll move onto our unit on electricity and magnetism.  During this unit the students will participate in a number of hands on activities.
