                  Mrs. Hotchkiss's Class

Thank you for visiting my web page.

Daily Reading

I encourage parents to read to and/or have your child read to you every day for 15 minutes.  All students are working at their guided reading level.

Social Studies During the first semester, we will be working on chapter 1 and 2 in students text. The focus will be Communities and Maps. The students will be discussing the following questions:

How does the place where people live impact their occupation, health, family                structures and communities?

Tell how communities are alike and different.

Explain how the physical and human characteristics of places impact the culture and experience of people, places, and regions?

Tell how using maps and globes help us to better understand our community and the people in it?

Vocabulary worksheets are given for each lesson within the unit. Please go over the words and their definitions with your child.

Science

Math We will begin the year with work on numbers and numeration.

Concept of Number/Place Value

Students will demonstrate knowledge of number identification, counting, making and identifying sets, standard and expanded notation, comparing numbers, read-write-order numbers.

Homework

Homework is generally given every night of the week except Friday. If there is a test the following week, study guides may be sent home over the weekend for review. Homework will be a review of concepts that are being taught in school each day. All assignments will be written down in student's assignment pad. Please check book each night. If your child does not turn in homework, they will be asked to complete it sometime during a break that day or the following night.

Discipline

My approach to discipline is to be very clear and consistent with expectations for behavior so students understand the consequences and can develop self-discipline and responsibility. It is just as important to reward students for good behavior in order to draw attention to the correct behavior.

I use various methods to manage student behavior. Generally, we follow 3 R's.
1.     Remind-student of the classroom rule or responsibility being broken.
2.     Re-direct the student to the correct behavior, and
3.     Reprimand the student appropriately.

We follow the school wide discipline program with some individual behavior incentives.

This year I can be found in the 3rd Grade Resource Room as well as other mainstream classrooms.
