Hearing-Impaired Program
Welcome to Watertown's Hearing-Impaired Program! Let me take a few moments to introduce both myself and the program to you.
The Watertown School System has a distictwide program for hearing-impaired students. Presently, our hearing-impaired students range in age from six (6) to twenty-one (21) years of age. The hearing losses they exhibit range from mild-moderate to severe-profound, both unilateral and bilateral in nature. Students who have a cochlear implant are also included in our hearing-impaired program. Both personal and school-based amplification is used by my students. The type of amplification to be used is determined through medical recommendations and discussed at Planning and Placement Team meetings.
The type and amount of service hearing-impaired students receive is as individual as the student himself. Generally, students are seen on an individual basis in order to work on their specific needs in the areas of speechreading, auditory training, and academic support. Students arrend classes in the integrated classroom both with and without support in order to ensure their individual comfort and success. Communication and comprehension are key components to my students accomplishments throughout their school day. The hearing-mpaired program strives to achieve these goals with the team approach that includes the student, his/her parents, the classroom teacher, and the entire school staff.
Now.... a little about me! I have enjoyed being Watertown's Teacher of the Hearing-Impaired for the past twenty-nine (29) years. Being a district teacher, I travel from school-to-school on a daily basis to work with my students. This has afforded me the opportunity to work with some of the most outstanding teachers and individually caring staff on all academic levels. My students have benefitted from their talent and their vested interest in each and every student. It has always been my hope and my joy that my students achieve thir own personal success having shared some part of their life with me. I know I have learned volumes from each one of them.
